SELF-CATERING ACCOMMODATION - GREEN POINT HOLDAY APARTMENTS

One of South Africa’s affluent suburbs, Green Point is located to the north west of the central business district. Popular with young professionals, the main thoroughfare is lined with restaurants, cafes, delis, boutiques and nightclubs and is known to be the Soho of Cape Town. Green Point prides itself on being gay friendly and is a lively experience of pubs, clubs and cabaret restuarants.

Many of the homes are Victorian-style restorations with balcones and trellises as well as lovelingly reconditioned homes turned offices.

Home to the Cape Town Stadium, built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, locals get to enjoy many high profile music concerts, soccer matches and rubgy games, and has even been witness to celebrity tennis matches and local charity events.

Perhaps the highlight of Green Point is the unique space located in the middle of the urban environment that is a fantastic, family friendly place, with an outdoor gym, a play park, adventure park and an outdoor labrinth. And for those wanting to learn a bit more about the local flora, the different plant species are easily identifiable with detailed information on them.

A stone’s throw away from the V&A Waterfront, Green Point is the perfect area for a bicycle commute, and with a number of bicycle hire shops, including motorised bicycles, you’ll have no excuse to get active on holiday.

And no visit to Green Point is complete without a stop at the Green Point Lighthouse, built in 1824, the first solid lighthouse structure on the South African coast and now the oldest operational lighthouse in the country.

Serving as the perfect tourist hotspot, the nightlife in and around the area is quite varied. We have put together a list of some of our favourite places to go in Green Point once the sun has set.

  • Crew Bar: With all the flamboyant décor and loud dance music, you’d be forgiven for thinking that you had somehow ended up in a club on the party island of Ibiza. Brightly coloured cushions, luxurious couches and bartenders who aren’t afraid to flaunt their bodies have made this club one of Cape Town’s most popular dance spots.
  • Beulah Bar: Close to a number of other bars along Somerset Road, Beulah Bar has become increasingly popular in recent years. With a great dance floor, wonderful DJs and fantastic bar staff, weekends at Beulah Bar are always packed and energetic, putting patrons in the perfect mood for a good night out.
  • Café Manhattan: As a New York themed establishment, Café Manhattan opened its doors in 1994 and has enjoyed roaring success ever since. With specials on beers and burgers, Café Manhattan is a strong contender for Cape Town’s LGBTI community’s favourite place to unwind. Although the café has had many struggles along the way and was on the verge of closing its doors during the economic recession, it still stands tall as one of the new South Africa’s first bars to allow admission to absolutely everyone.
  • Barbosa Social Café: Previously known as the Buena Vista Social Café, Barbosa Social Café’s website pens it as being “centrally located in the hub of trendy Green Point.” Close by to accommodation in Green Point, the café has now upgraded to include three bars, an outdoor area and a brand new menu. Nachos, quesadillas and mouth-watering deserts are amongst the numerous items available on the new menu, as well as a variety of cocktails to add a little bit of razzle-dazzle to your night.
  • ZAR: A little bit further along the Main Road than the Pink Strip, ZAR is one of Cape Town’s better-known clubs. Founded by businessman Kenny Kunene, ZAR is known for elegance, class and exclusivity. The first of its kind in the Mother City, one of the lounge/bar/club’s main attractions is an LED (Light-Emitting Diode) red carpet. Guests are treated like royalty from the moment they step into ZAR, making it a favourite amongst locals and tourists alike.

Green Point nightlife is a wonderful reflection of Cape Town itself – diverse, colourful and exciting. There are so many things to do, all of which are so varied.
